Thom Kiddle, NILE, Uzbekistan

NILE Director Thom Kiddle’s ninth trip to Uzbekistan was a hugely productive mix of events and activities this May.

Firstly, the opportunity to present the findings of Phase 1 of the CPD in Schools in collaboration with British Council Uzbekistan to the Ministry of Preschool and School Education of Uzbekistan, and then to the English Reform Steering Group in Tashkent.

Following this, two days of training with an inspiring group of teachers who will form the National CPD Consultants team in Phase 2 of the project.

Finally, a long-awaited visit to Samarkand to meet with the founder, heads of department and teachers from Zarmed University, and to talk to teachers, and the Faculty Dean and Head of International Relations at Samarkand State Institute of Foreign Languages.

Upon his return, Thom was invited to the Embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan in London to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Minister of Preschool and School Education, Khilola Umarova, in the presence of the Uzbek Ambassador to the UK, Ravshan Usmanov. Thom commented:

“Signing the MoU was a pivotal moment recognizing and formalizing the exciting collaboration between NILE, the Uzbek government, and educational institutes across the country – with a collective goal of supporting the development of Uzbekistan’s education system. We are honoured to have been invited to sign this memorandum and look forward to continuing our work with British Council Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Preschool and School Education.”
