In this course we will look at the fundamental characteristics of a CLIL-based approach and examine the major developments that have shaped the methodology over the past 25 years – from thinking skills to pluriliteracies, multi-lingual education and mediating content. As part of the course you will learn how to develop your students’ knowledge of a curriculum subject as well as their language skills and proficiency. The course is highly practical, using current CLIL theory to illustrate lesson and course design, effective classroom practice, materials design and CLIL-based assessment parameters. As a participant on the course you will have the opportunity to share your own experiences and concerns, with a view to developing and improving your own practice and implementing change within your own particular educational contexts..

Course content
This course explores the history of teaching content in English and English through content, and identifies the principles underlying effective practice.
You will look at the necessary skills required for CLIL teachers, explore materials and methodologies appropriate to CLIL and raise your language awareness and linguistic competences. Key issues in course design will be examined, as well as testing and assessment procedures in CLIL contexts.

Timetable
This course consists of 50 hours of tuition, usually delivered between 09:00 and 16:00, Monday - Friday. Each course includes an evening and weekend programme of social and cultural activities and trips.

Course Leader: Phil Ball
Phil is based in San Sebastián in Spain. He is a CLIL materials writer and teacher-trainer and has been closely involved with the award-winning Basque project, ‘Eleanitz’. He has been involved in several European-based CLIL projects, and has written a wide variety of CLIL-based textbooks for the Basque and Spanish social science and English language programmes. He co-designed the new ‘CLIL Essentials’ online course for the British Council, is the co-author of ‘Putting CLIL into Practice’ (OUP 2015) and his CLIL textbook series for the Basque curriculum was nominated for the ELTons Innovation Award in 2016.
