Erkan ArkinNILE Consultant Trainer
Erkan is a freelance consultant trainer, working for NILE. He is an academic tutor on NILE’s Teaching English for Academic Purposes and English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) courses. He holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics, specialising in English Medium Instruction in higher education. He also serves as a thesis supervisor on NILE's MA in Professional Development for Language Education programmme.
Erkan previously worked as a lecturer at the TESOL teacher education programme of Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), North Cyprus. He also had various other roles at the same university, including head of professional development at the School of Languages and academic coordinator at the Rector’s Office. He currently works as a part-time lecturer at EMU.
Erkan comes from an educational background with over twenty years' teaching experience in the university context. He has a strong interest in contributing to the education and development of pre-service and in-service teachers, thanks to his dual role as faculty staff and professional development specialist at the university’s Foreign Languages and English preparatory school.
After completing his doctoral study, Erkan became interested in supporting university lecturers to improve their educational practices, specifically focussing on maximising learning in English-taught programmes. His latest presentations and publications have covered topics on EMI in higher education and EMI teacher training, including chapter contributions in three edited books: English-Medium Instruction in European Higher Education: English in Europe (2015); English as the Medium of Instruction in Turkish Higher Education: Policy, Practice and Progress (2022); and Multilingualism & EMI in North Cyprus: Policies and Practices (in progress).
